Tyler Martin, a first-year doctoral student in mechanical engineering (MECH) at Rice, has won the “Best Graduate Level Presentation” at the ninth annual Texas STEM Conference.

Martin said of his presentation, titled “Powering Soft Wearable Devices Using Body Heat”: “We showcased a renewable method of harnessing waste energy from the human body to power assistive devices without the need for electronics or air compressors.”

The conference was held Oct. 30 at Lamar University in Beaumont. Martin earned his B.S. in MECH last spring from Lamar, and is a 2021 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow at Rice.

His research over the summer in the Preston Innovation Laboratory of Daniel J. Preston, assistant professor of MECH,  was supported by a David J. Beck Fellowship from Lamar, given to students pursuing external research or internships.
