Doris Xu, a senior in mechanical engineering (MECH) at Rice University, has won the “Best Poster Presentation” in a workshop at the IEEE’s 2022 International Symposium on Medical Robotics (ISMR), held April 13-15 at Georgia Tech.

The poster she presented is titled “A Textile-Based Approach to Wearable Haptic Devices,” based on a paper of the same name on which she is third author. She presented her poster at the “Diversity in Surgical Training” workshop during the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers conference.

Her research was a collaboration between the Mechatronics and Haptic Interfaces Lab, directed by Marcia O’Malley, the Thomas Michael Panos Family Professor in MECH, and the Preston Innovation Laboratory, directed by Daniel J. Preston, assistant professor of MECH. The joint work is devoted to creating wearable haptic devices constructed of comfortable, lightweight textiles.
